The Zodiacs came to be in an ancient war.
Hundreds of years ago, when The Zodiacs still lived in China, there was talk between the shapeshifters of the region of a new camp which would house those born under the Chinese Zodiac calender, who were Shapeshifters born solely for the purpose of upholding the traditions of the Zodiacs. It was a novel concept, which traveled all throughout the land through Shapeshifters and only Shapeshifters. Nothing before had been even attempted like that. When word reached Japan, however, there were those who were born under the Year of the Cat rather than the Year of the Rabbit. Many of the Year of the Cat's people were angry, because this camp would not house them along with the other Shapeshifters of their kind. That, along with the power struggle that broke out fighting between the Zodiacs entering the camp, caused chaos in the Shapeshifter world. A raging war happened, where the people divided into many groups. By the time the Zodiacs entering the camp finally stopped fighting, they were severely weakened. They, however, still outnumbered the Year of the Cat's people, so they won the war, but barely. 100 years later, The Year of the Cat rouges banded together once more, and defeated The Zodiac Camp using cunning and tricks. The Zodiac Shapeshifters were seemingly lost forever, and eventually the Zodiac calender was tossed to the side, disowned as a horoscope myth, and mostly forgotten by the people of China and the world.
Another 100 years later, and the Legend of the Zodiacs was uncovered once more. 10 years ago, in fact. The 14 year old Acadia Salivas was only first discovering her powers when on a trip to China with her family, where her powers were greatly strengthened. When learning of these powers, she felt a strong pulse of energy when walking down a road nearby the city they were staying in. She was transformed into a Snake, her Zodiac Avatar, and followed the energy she felt into a snake hole, that was actually a tunnel leading underground. Straight to the Ancient Zodiac Camp, which had been buried deep underground. Discovering the place, she realized what it was only when she found the bodies of the Zodiacs, which had been buried with the Camp, and somehow preserved. Next to each of the zodiacs, there appeared to be a sign carved into the ground. Next to one, was a picture of a boar, another a rooster, another a dragon, and another a snake. By the time she realized they were Shapeshifters, the same as her, she was deep in the camp. When she reached the center of the camp, she was approached by a man, who told her of The Ancient Zodiacs, what they did and what they were, and what killed them. He told her that she was also one.
That man also made an offer. He informed Acadia that she could create a newer, stronger camp in America, the new center of Western Civilization, and if she went with him, he could teach her to master her powers, and even build a camp for her to begin with. However, he informed her that if she went with him, she would never see her family again, and she would face great happiness, and greater sorrow. She accepted, and so The Zodiac Camp as it is known today was born.
Since then, several generations of Zodiacs have passed, and several things have changed. However, The Zodiacs live on.
